Beaucarnea recurvata Ponytail Palm
Equipped with a massive bulbous trunk for storing water, it tolerates long stretches of dry conditions. It also makes an easy-to-grow houseplant.
The evergreen leaves are long and strap- or grass-like. They are rather tough and leathery, with very finely serrated edges – sharp enough to cut skin. The rosette of leaves emanates from the top of the trunk or ends of the branches, and gracefully cascade down like a green fountain. On many plants the leaves twist or curl slightly when longer, giving the plant an interesting, flowing look. Older leaves eventually turn yellow and dry up; these can be removed.
Ponytail palm grows best in full sun. Give it as much bright light as possible when grown indoors.
Watering ponytail palm differs from summer to winter. In summer, water ponytail palm deeply but infrequently, allowing the plant to dry out before watering again. Reduce watering significantly in winter. In its native environment, they receives little or no water in winter. Mimic those conditions by watering the plant deeply every few weeks in winter.
